Urge the LA County Board of Supervisors to Accept School Waivers and Get Our Children Back to Learning

To the Honorable Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

Chair Kathryn Barger, Fifth District

Supervisor Hilda Solis, First District

Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, Second District

Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Third District

Supervisor Janice Hahn, Fourth District

We need to put our children first.

Governor Gavin Newsom, in conjunction with advisement of the CDC and other organizations, have established strict guidelines for schools reopening to promote the utmost safety for students.

LA County’s Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer is choosing to deny and ignore schools and parents who want a choice in how their children receive their education. It is very concerning that LA County is choosing to allow some businesses to open but denying children and families an option for their children’s learning environment.

LA County continues to ignore its parents during this crucial time when more than 6,000 kindergarten students in the nation’s second largest school district are not attending virtual classes due to Zoom fatigue and lack the essential resources necessary to educate their children full-time at home.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released its guidelines for school re-entry with a strong recommendation that ALL policy considerations for the school year should start with the goal of having students physically present in school, noting the well-documented evidence of the negative impacts on children due to the school closures earlier this year in the spring of 2020.

The County must open up the K-6 elementary school waiver process so that communities who receive buy-in from teachers, families, and administration have a choice in their children’s education, in alignment with state guidelines.

We have added our names and addresses to this petition to give children and parents a voice in this process and we urge the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to put our children and communities first by opening up the school waiver process.
